Ajith’s Vivegam, which opens this Thursday, is all set for a mammoth worldwide release, with its Tamil Nadu theatre count touching upwards of 700 screens. The film’s theatre booking has already begun, with the biggest screens being reserved for its release.
The stage is set for the film to take on the opening-day collection of Rajinikanth’s Kabali, which collected a record ₹21.5 crore from Tamil Nadu alone. Given that Ajith’s previous film, Vedhalam (2015), had collected ₹15.5 crore on day one, this target doesn’t seem far out of reach. Apart from the massive opening, another factor that connects both Kabali and Vedhalam is that they were released during the reign of former Chief Minster J Jayalalithaa.
But the big question is that since August 24 is not a holiday, theaters can’t schedule extra shows as per Tamil Nadu Government’s rules. Considering the current relationship between Aiadmk Government and Tamil Film industry, it’s highly unlikely to have early morning shows for Vivegam. As of now, theaters are planning to start the first show in TN around 7.30 AM. A few theaters locked 8.00 AM as their first show but none of the owners have confirmed any early morning (4 AM, 5 AM ) shows for Vivegam, said a source in the trade.
For Ajith’s previous film Vedalam, the producer had good support from the ruling party that many theaters had early morning shows and Diwali weekend helped the film to register career best opening for the actor. Now Ajith has to outperform Vedalam’s collection with Vivegam because the latter’s budget is 30-40% higher than the former. The pre-release business of Vivegam has also crossed 100cr mark and almost all the territories have been bought for a record price. We also hear that there won’t be any premieres in Gulf Countries and the first show of Vivegam is likely to happen in USA.
