Jab Harry Met Sejal was off to a disappointing start, when it earned Rs 15.25 crore on Friday and went on to become Shah Rukh Khan’s lowest opener at the box office in five years. The last time SRK’s film saw such an opening figure was Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012), which made Rs 15.23 crore on its opening day. According to early estimates, the film has not shown much growth on the second day, collecting Rs 16.50 crore.
The film revolves around tourist guide Harinder Singh Nehra aka Harry (SRK), a cheap man, who discovers himself and love while helping Sejal (Anushka) find her engagement ring, which she loses on a vacation in Europe. Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 80 crore, it is crucial for Jab Harry Met Sejal to cash in on Sunday and the Raksha Bandhan holiday on Monday. Next week, the film will face competition at the box office from Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar-starrer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.
The signs were right there on Friday itself when the collections didn’t really hit the roof. By the time the day came to a close the audience word of mouth had already started spreading. Since it stooped mainly towards the lower side, the challenge was to be stable rather than growth on Saturday. Released across more than 3200 screens in India. The film also released amidst the holiday of Rakshabandhan, which falls on Monday.
The bookings for evening shows are not healthy. Till now, the occupancy for the day is only 35-40%. Families and youngsters may come as the day matures but judging by its Saturday numbers, one can’t hope much. If nothing, at least a mild growth needs to be shown by Jab Harry Met Sejal if it wants to sustain in weekdays.
